Get to Know Forman Scholar Alex Gomez!

Alex Gomez has always been fascinated with how things work, so his pursuit of a degree in mechanical engineering at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey, comes as no surprise. Learn more about Alex and the plans he has for his college career.

Have you always known you wanted to study engineering in college?

When I was a kid, I always used to take things apart to see how they worked – particularly cameras, which might explain why there are very few baby pictures of me. This fascination persisted throughout my childhood and now into adulthood. I’m also a bit of a car enthusiast, especially Hondas. I could see myself working for Honda in a role that allowed me to blend my passion for cars with my interest in engineering.

What types of activities were you involved in as a Salem student?

I spent a significant amount of time volunteering, from working with organizations like Project Restore and Lighthouse Ministry Tutoring to participating in Student Council and other fundraisers at school. I also got involved with nearly every music program, including marching band and Ram Singers. In terms of leadership, I served as president of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and captain of the soccer team, as well as a member of the National Honor Society and the Academic League.

What excites you most about the college journey ahead?

I’m optimistic about my college experience, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me. I’m somewhat of a social butterfly, so my goal is to meet as many new people as possible and hopefully make friendships that will last a lifetime.

How do you plan to make the most of your experience at Rowan?

My plan is to get involved in a couple of organizations right away. Rowan’s Chi Alpha chapter – a Christian fellowship organization that shares, analyzes and applies the teachings of Christ – is one group that interests me. I might also consider playing on a few intramural sports teams, maybe soccer or volleyball.

How has the Forman Acton Foundation contributed to your growth as a person and a student?

The Foundation’s support has been a godsend. In particular, the organization’s support has ensured that I am starting college with all of the tools and resources I need to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom. I can’t thank them enough.
