Get to Know Forman Scholar Jayara Wright!

For Jayara Wright, nursing is in the family, and she’s hoping to continue that tradition as a first-year student at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. Learn more about Jayara and the plans she has for her college career.

What gravitated you toward nursing?

I’ve always had a passion to help others. Many of my family are in the healthcare field, and their work has inspired me to make others’ lives better. After college, I hope to become a pediatric nurse, preferably at Johns Hopkins.

How did you stay involved as a student at Salem High School?

I was very involved in high school. I was a member of the National Honor Society, Drama Club and the International Baccalaureate program. Also, I competed on the track and field team, played on the hockey team, and managed the basketball team. I was – and still am – heavily involved in community service work. I spent this past summer working with a program called City Lights, and I have worked with Project Restore since eighth grade.

What’s your favorite high school memory?

I’d have to say homecoming season. I won both Homecoming Queen and Parade Queen, which was pretty special.

Do you have any plans for your first year at Morgan State?

I’d like to join a few organizations – like Black Women and Medicine, the local NAACP chapter, and student government – to quickly get involved. I also plan to join a sorority and become a resident assistant on campus.

How has the Forman Acton Foundation contributed to your growth as a person and a student?

The Foundation has made me a more well-rounded student and has relieved some of the stress of attending an out-of-state HBCU (Historically Black College and University). But what I’m most appreciative of is the work of Ms. Kim and the other mentors who have helped guide and shape students like me. They check in on us constantly and make sure we never feel alone.
